I have taught for language schools in Germany and the largest language learning software company in the world. I have taught using full immersion (using only the target language) and a combination of mostly full immersion with minimal translation. I teach in the target language but will not shy away from breaking immersion, if needed. How do I decide when to break immersion? I break immersion when it is obvious to me that the learner is confused. Confusion causes frustration and frustration may cause learners to lose motivation. My goal is to keep my students inspired. What about grammar you ask? I very rarely use drill techniques or tedious grammar exercises that can be very boring (you may remember these from your Spanish class in high school). Instead, I explain what we are working on, clarify what the grammar structures are, and allow students to practice with real, palpable situations (role plays, conversation, narrating).
